II. READING

TASK 1. Read the passage. Circle the correct answer A, B, C, or D to each of the questions.

Global warming is one of the biggest challenges we face today. The Earth’s average temperature has been rising steadily over the past century due to human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. As the planet warms, we are experiencing more extreme weather events, including heatwaves, droughts, and heavy rainfall.

The effects of global warming are not limited to weather. Rising temperatures are also causing sea levels to rise, which threatens coastal cities and communities. In addition, the warming climate is affecting biodiversity, as many species struggle to adapt to changing conditions. Some animals and plants may even become extinct if they cannot survive in warmer environments.

To combat global warming, governments around the world have taken steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, are being promoted as cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels. At the same time, efforts to protect forests and reduce waste are also important in addressing the problem.

  1. What is the main cause of global warming mentioned in the passage?
    A. Natural changes in the Earth’s climate
    B. Human activities like burning fossil fuels and deforestation
    C. Overpopulation in coastal areas
    D. The use of renewable energy sources
  2. What is one effect of global warming discussed in the passage?
    A. The extinction of certain animal species
    B. An increase in the world’s population
    C. The disappearance of renewable energy sources
    D. A rise in global temperatures
  3. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a consequence of global warming?
    A. More extreme weather events
    B. Rising sea levels
    C. Loss of biodiversity
    D. Increased agricultural production
  4. What are governments doing to fight global warming?
    A. They are encouraging the use of fossil fuels.
    B. They are developing new technology to control the weather.
    C. They are promoting renewable energy sources.
    D. They are building more factories to produce goods.
  5. According to the passage, why is it important to protect forests?
    A. They help to reduce waste.
    B. They can provide alternative energy sources.
    C. They play a role in addressing global warming.
    D. They are a source of food for wildlife.

TASK 2. Fill in the blanks with ONE suitable word for each blank.

Global warming is a serious environmental issue that affects the entire planet. One of the main causes of global warming is the (1) ___________ of fossil fuels, which release harmful gases into the atmosphere. In addition, deforestation (2) ___________ to the problem, as trees help absorb carbon dioxide. If we do not take action, the consequences will be (3) ___________—we will experience more extreme weather and loss of biodiversity. It is essential that we switch to renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind (4) ___________, and make efforts to protect forests. If we continue to ignore the problem, we risk (5) ___________ the future of our planet.
